Rome was a TV series produced with a joint effort by HBO, the BBC, and RAI (from Italy). The series lasted two seasons; the first being the rise and fall of Julius Caesar, and the second being the rise of Emperor Augustus. The show is considered a “historical drama” because it is based off actual historical events, but some deviations were made for the sake of story-telling. Even so, the series makes a great job of making things as authentic as possible.

For example, most of the filming was done in Italy, and modern-day Romans are used as extras. Additionally, any artisans depicted on screen were people skilled in the trade and not actors (butchers were hired to portray butchers). Moreover, there are various throwbacks to ancient Roman customs that a huge history nerd like me would recognize.
Besides that, the series still stands up well as a television series. The acting is top notch, the dialogue is great, and the cinematography is artistically well done. The story is (or should be) already known by most people, almost on a legendary scale. Sort of like how people know the basics of the Arthurian legend (a king, sword in stone, knights of round table, etc), people know the basics of Ancient Rome (Caesar, Ides of March, stabbed a buncha times, etc).
Below are a couple of short clips from the series:
