Flogging Molly kicked off their Green 17 tour this year at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. See this post for more details about the show.
Besides playing most of their hits, this show had a lot of songs that they normally do not play live. This includes more of their slower songs like “The Sun Never Shines on Closed Doors” and “Us of Lesser Gods“.
I’m a fan of their slower songs, but I’d rather not listen to them live. This was a good set, but I’ve been to others that had a better selection of songs.
I was actually trying to explain “moshing” and “pits” to one of my co-workers earlier this week. He’s in his mid-forties and I guess there’s a big generation gap to it. I told him that it’s all about releasing tension or aggression, and that live shows are great for the energy they give off. He could not understand why people sing along to songs, and I tried to relate it to soccer chants and other sports games.
I told him, “those pits are basically the closest you can get to being in a riot without getting shot by tear gas.”
He still didn’t get it.
Anyways, I shot some short clips of the Flogging Molly show with emphasis on crowd reaction. Ironically, I didn’t get shots of most of their hits because I joined the crowd, and any of the other songs were slow ballads. Oh well. Check them out anyways:
