Just some campy trailers I found whilst scouring the internets.

First, historical inaccuracies abound in:

Isle of the Dead @ Governor’s Island

Posted on June 7th, 2009

A couple of us may have been extras in this:

From “Zombies Invade Governors Island“:

Governors Island’s most recent claim to fame might be Prince Harry and his polo cronies, but this past weekend it welcomed guests somewhat, er, less refined: zombies. On Sunday afternoon, volunteers hopped the ferry over to the island to film the final scene of a movie called Isle of the Dead, produced by Creative Time and an art collective known as the Bruce High Quality Foundation or “the Bruces,” as they refer to themselves.

Isle of the Dead has a pretty simple plot line — the credit crisis kills the art world and its players, who reemerge as zombies in an alternative movement inspired only by art from the past. The film begins with sweeping shots of dead bodies splayed out in front of the Met, Guggenheim, and Whitney museums, plus a strip of galleries in Chelsea, and ends with a zombie uprising on Governors Island, where the zombies congregate for a sing-along to the Bryan Adams classic, “Summer of ‘69.”

Blitzkid

A few months ago, or were it years, I was searching about the interwebs looking for information about the band that we all know and love, The Misfits. For those unacquainted “The Misfits” is a Horror Punk band that was started in 1977 by Glenn Danzig. The band went on to have moderate fame in the late seventies and early eighties before breaking up. They were reformed in the mid nineties (95/96) by Bassist Jerry Only and Guitarist Doyle after a long legal battle with Danzig. Now with a new drummer and singer, Dr. Chud and Michale Graves respectively, they went on to become more mainstream, but still failed to really ever be anything more than a cult hit. They eventually broke up again, with all the members going their own ways this time.  Jerry continued with The Misfits, with mixed reviews, Chud formed his own band (Dr. Chud’s X-Ward), Graves went solo and now does all acoustic stuff, including old misfits tunes, and Doyle created his own band as well, Gorgeous Frankenstein. All four members still write horror based music and have all had moderate success, but nothing beyond cult status.

So, to the point. I had heard some of Gorgeous Frankenstein, but I honestly wasn’t very impressed, until one day I stumbled upon a video on Youtube of Gorgeous Frankenstein playing “Dig up her Bones”,  a favorite from the Graves era of the Misfits.  At first I was skeptical, but was quickly turned as the vocals were surprisingly good! I had no idea who the vocalist was so I looked it up, and low and behold is was Argyle Goolsby. I had no idea who he was, but he seemed pretty talented, he sung well and played bass at the same time.

This led me to find an interview with Doyle and Goolsby on Youtube where Goolsby mentioned that he was the front man for a band called Blitzkid.  So, I looked up Blitzkid, and to my great surprise, they were completely awesome.

Now for some info on the band. Taken from the band’s myspace.

Blitzkid is one of the premiere horror rock bands of the new millennium. They began in Bluefield, WV in the winter of 1997. They have toured consistently all over the US and overseas. The band is headed up by TB Monstrosity(guitars/vokills) and Argyle Goolsby(bass/vokills). In the time they have been a band, they have garnered critical underground acclaim for their tireless work ethic, consistent, ever evolving album output and dedication to giving their audience the respect they deserve through providing great songs and energetic live shows. The band has a prodigious and Herculean following in the states as well as Europe, and have shared the stage, in some cases regularly, with such notable acts as Agent Orange, the Damned, Leftover Crack, the Misfits, the Rezurex, Bella Morte, Mad Sin, the Exploited, Ignite and the Casualties. Blitzkid have also been a part of many of the biggest festivals in Europe including Mera Luna, Rock My Ass, Endless Summer and even the predominantly metal/hardcore festival Summer Breeze, where they shared the stage with Dark Tranquility and Soulfy in the summer of 2007 in front of over 20,000 people. They are booked by Weird World Entertainment in Europe, and managed overseas by D-Tour booking. They are booked exclusively by Thunderdome Touring in North America. The band has a label home based out of Koln, Germany in Fiend Force Records and remain one of the top selling acts on the label since they began their tenure there in 2004. The band has released material consistently since 1999, and in that time, have released six full length albums, two split vinyl EPs, and a live DVD.

I have been listening to this band for a while now, and I really dig them. They remind me of the Graves era misfits. It’s a shame that bands like this go under the radar for so long. I hope that one day they get the success that they deserve.

You can listen to a bunch of their songs on their myspace. http://www.myspace.com/blitzkid

I am particularly fond of Mary and the Storm. This band has been a large influence on my band “The Theatre Zombies”, and we cover some of their songs.

The Abominable Dr. Phibes

Posted on February 14th, 2009
by Harms

I feel like sharing these two trailers, since I stumbled upon them when looking for a music video set to the Misfits song. The Misfits wrote a song called “Dr. Phibes Rises Again”, named after the sequel, but when the album American Psycho came out, they chopped it down to just the intro and called it “The Abominable Dr. Phibes”, after the first movie. Anyway, after that useless knowledge, now enjoy this Vincent Price fueled goodness:

For some reason, I feel like the sequel is almost supposed to be a spoof of the original. At least, that’s what I got from the trailers. Hope you enjoy.

A Week of Ninecents Music: The Undead

undead

The Undead are a race aligned with the Horde in World of Warcraft. Available classes with this race are Mage, Priest, Rogue, Warlock, Warrior, and with the recent expansion, the Death Knight.

Their racial abilities include “Cannibalize”, which regenerates 7% of total health every 2 sec for 10 sec when used on humanoid or undead corpses. You also get “Will of the Forsaken” which breaks any charm, fear, or sleep effects which is pretty ballin’ in PVP. “Underwater Breathing” allows you to stay underwater longer than any other race, which is pretty convenient. Undead also get a minor boost to shadow spells, which is decent.

Happy Friday! No it’s not the 13th…YET.

Anyways, the next Friday the 13th occurs on February 13, 2009. And of course there’s a couple of us here that celebrate that day like if it were…uh…some sort of special day I guess. Hey, another reason to party, amirite?

Anyways, a while ago, a horror movie marathon was planned with the goals of picking movies that

  • A) cover all genres, styles, and/or famous directors/writers
  •  B) are good but people most likely have not seen

Also, some kind of drinking game should be involved.

Here’s that list of movies with the genre it covers. This post shall be updated to include more info about each movie, and will be modified if other people would like to propose changes.

Keep in mind the above goals, especially #B: we do not want common movies. I mean, we could do a marathon on Freddy and Jason, but I’d rather not. In no particular order:

Theatre Zombies

Posted on November 26th, 2008
by Tommy

Some of you may know of another band I recently helped start. Well, we’re the Theatre Zombies and we recently made some crude recordings. Feel free to listen to them on our MySpace and add us as a friend.

We’re very heavily influenced by the Misfits; most of our songs will be about various horror movies…and possibly about getting diarrhea from Taco Bell and other establishments.

Speaking about explosive diarrhea, fellow Ninecent blogger Khalid plays guitar in the band. I’m on drums, and my friends Mike & Rob do bass and vocals, respectively.

Rob has written most of our songs so far, with Khalid and Mike coming up with some stuff as well. We also cover a couple Misfit and Ramones songs. I think we’ll have to learn Pet Sematary at some point.

Feel free to give us a listen, and post any comments or questions you may have.

Aboard The Midnight Meat Train to Wicked Monk

I had the wonderful opportunity to fight the pouring rains and tread through dark puddles to Tom’s place this past weekend to see just what kind of “poppy goth” music he has been creating/writing/producing for our little project. Oh, in case you didn’t already know, Tom and I both currently live in the same ‘hood of Brooklyn within walking distance (but not driving distance). In case you didn’t know this second fact, Tom is also a really talented audio engineer which is why you get to see the various moods displayed on his webcam during long sessions. Feel free to tell him to cheer up via The-Grid. He’s also the resident NineCents audio engineer working on just about everyone’s audio projects. I can’t say what the music will be like except that he has so kindly agreed to let it be heavily influenced by sounds that I am very much fond of. The start of a little diddy has begun. We (he) didn’t get to tweak a guitar part that needs a little changing because Jonathan Davis delivered our pizza from the KoRn(er). However, before the fine dining, I did get to learn something. I now know what a reverb is. Ok, I at least know that you can add it to make something sound more echoey. I think. Feel free to correct and re-educate me, Tom. All in all, I can’t wait to start playing around with plug-ins (when I get them, ahem).

Step away from the closing doors, pleaseI hope we can actually have a complete track one day but we moved on to scarfing down pizza and hopping on board the Midnight Meat Train. If you haven’t heard of this film Continue reading this post…

A Week of Ninecents Music: Misfits

Posted on October 13th, 2008
by Tommy

The Misfits are a horror punk band that originally formed in the 70’s. The band has gone through multiple line-up changes and is widely considered to be divided into separate eras based on vocalist: Glenn Danzig, Michale Graves, and Jerry Only. Although fans may be just as divided, one thing can be agreed on: the Misfits helped merge horror and punk.

The Misfits’ repertoire includes songs such as “The Monster Mash”, “Halloween”, and “Astro Zombies”. Typical band members have also been known to wear face paint resembling skulls, or have “devilock” hair.  The band’s logo is based off the 1946 film serial, “The Crimson Ghost“. If you’re not convinced yet, here are some videos:
