Social Scamming Sites

Posted on November 5th, 2009

Interesting article about scamming through social networking games:

“Scamville: The Social Gaming Ecosystem Of Hell“:

In short, these games try to get people to pay cash for in game currency so they can level up faster and have a better overall experience. Which is fine. But for users who won’t pay cash, a wide variety of “offers” are available where they can get in-game currency in exchange for lead gen-type offers. Most of these offers are bad for consumers because it confusingly gets them to pay far more for in-game currency than if they just paid cash (there are notable exceptions, but the scammy stuff tends to crowd out the legitimate offers). And it’s also bad for legitimate advertisers.

I ran across an interesting video about a particular social networking website that I thought might be of some interest. You probably already know the official ninecents opinion on Facebook.

Thoughts?

The Tragedy that is Facebook

Ah Facebook. You used to be a somewhat respectable college student social networking site, and now, I just don’t know what to make of you anymore. The current typical Facebook scenario goes somewhat like this:

Facebook, YouTube at work make better employees: study

Posted on April 3rd, 2009

This was taken from Yahoo! News:

MELBOURNE (Reuters Life!) – Caught Twittering or on Facebook at work? It’ll make you a better employee, according to an Australian study that shows surfing the Internet for fun during office hours increases productivity.

The University of Melbourne study showed that people who use the Internet for personal reasons at work are about 9 percent more productive that those who do not.

Study author Brent Coker, from the department of management and marketing, said “workplace Internet leisure browsing,” or WILB, helped to sharpened workers’ concentration.

“People need to zone out for a bit to get back their concentration,” Coker said on the university’s website (www.unimelb.edu.au/)

“Short and unobtrusive breaks, such as a quick surf of the Internet, enables the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher total net concentration for a days’ work, and as a result, increased productivity,” he said.

According to the study of 300 workers, 70 percent of people who use the Internet at work engage in WILB.

Among the most popular WILB activities are searching for information about products, reading online news sites, playing online games and watching videos on YouTube.

“Firms spend millions on software to block their employees from watching videos, using social networking sites or shopping online under the pretence that it costs millions in lost productivity,” said Coker. “That’s not always the case.”

However, Coker said the study looked at people who browsed in moderation, or were on the Internet for less than 20 percent of their total time in the office.

“Those who behave with Internet addiction tendencies will have a lower productivity than those without,” he said.

I think my office should let me do whatever the hell I want at work in order to increase my already OFF THE CHARTS productivity. Including, but not limited to: mini-golfing through the office, flying a kite in the courtyard by the cafeteria, and throwing random items against the wall and seeing how long it takes them to fall down.

Seriously, though, my company has a web filter that doesn’t let us do anything, except most online shopping sites work. That’s it. No personal email, no blogs, no music, nothing.

Facebook is a Pile of Shit: Second Heap

Posted on February 20th, 2009
by Tommy

This is a follow-up to this post.

Everyone’s heard the commotion about Facebook, so let’s get it out of the way:

Facebook changed their Terms of Service (TOS) in regards to user privacy. They wanted rights to all user generated content FOREVER, even after an account has been deactivated. People had a shit fit, and so Facebook changed their TOS again to reflect their old policy (meaning once an account is deactivated, Facebook loses rights to that user’s content).

(Notice I used the word “deactivated“. Just remember that your account is never completely gone in the world of Facebook.)

Really people, exercise some common sense. Do not post anything you do want to be made public. This article puts it into good perspective:

Say you had a lapse of good judgment in your youth, hung out with some Communist Party members and shared some photos of you and your new pals with your Facebook friends.

Now say you’re older, and you choose to run for office, and you want to get rid of any incriminating photos or information out there about you — like maybe that online petition you signed advocating the legalization of marijuana. You delete everything from your Facebook page, and you should be good, right?

Slight problem. That picture of you and the guys with the hammers and the sickles is probably still out there, somewhere. And it won’t go away.

Keep your friends close, but keep your Whopper closer.

Original site

Burger King will give you a free Whopper if you “sacrifice” 10 friends.  “Sacrificing” means unfriending someone and adding them to your wall of shame.

If this were for Rodeo Cheeseburgers, I’d re-register Facebook.

That’s right, I said it.

Burger King, know this: the price of my Facebook profile is a bunch of free Rodeo Cheeseburgers.
