On a quick perusal of my Google Reader feeds, I came across a listing of 35 Beautiful Photography Websites compiled by Smashing Magazine. There really are some fantastic websites showcasing beautiful work. Here are a few of my favorites:
- She has a whole section devoted to dolls and they’re are awesome. I worked on a similar project but my collection certainly does not match hers. She works with ball-jointed dolls. If you look on page four, there’s one biting her lip… where are these dolls? Great.
- Another thing that caught my eye and made me explore more was a photo of The Birthday Massacre. One of my favorite musical projects.
Faces on Images: Les Forrester Photo
- There are some photos in the galleries in the “Giants of Steam” section that look like CGI. I like them. Like THIS one.
- Amazing work that are “emotional”, “atmospheric”, and “nostalgic”. The only thing I’m not a fan of is the flash beginning that you can’t skip but the work itself is definitely moody.
The Photography of Chris Phelps
- Loving the apple right on the first page. The rest of his photos aren’t too shabby either.
Check out the rest of the list for more great sites to browse and scour. And yes, for a post talking about great photo sites, I did not include any actual images to accompany this - I hope it’s still appealing for you.
A couple of us may have been extras in this:
From “Zombies Invade Governors Island“:
Governors Island’s most recent claim to fame might be Prince Harry and his polo cronies, but this past weekend it welcomed guests somewhat, er, less refined: zombies. On Sunday afternoon, volunteers hopped the ferry over to the island to film the final scene of a movie called Isle of the Dead, produced by Creative Time and an art collective known as the Bruce High Quality Foundation or “the Bruces,” as they refer to themselves.
Isle of the Dead has a pretty simple plot line — the credit crisis kills the art world and its players, who reemerge as zombies in an alternative movement inspired only by art from the past. The film begins with sweeping shots of dead bodies splayed out in front of the Met, Guggenheim, and Whitney museums, plus a strip of galleries in Chelsea, and ends with a zombie uprising on Governors Island, where the zombies congregate for a sing-along to the Bryan Adams classic, “Summer of ‘69.”
I enjoyed these photo-sets showing all the things that happen in a hotel room. The first set I think was inspired by the second. The punk rockin party in #9 is great, and the expression on the guy’s face in #3 is priceless. Some of them are a little NSFW.
You all might know that I love totalitarian art and imagery. Ben Ross has posted a cool collection of PRC cultural revolution posters, which he got for a measly 50 kuai.
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3. He has also posted some street art graffiti in China. According to Ben, hip hop culture hasn’t caught on much in China, but it has in Mongolia.
smARThistory.org is a free multi-media web-book designed as a dynamic enhancement (or even substitute) for the traditional and static art history textbook. Dr. Beth Harris and Dr. Steven Zucker began smARThistory in 2005 by creating a blog featuring free audio guides in the form of podcasts for use in The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Found this on another blog which I usually try to stay away from because of my personal beliefs (artistic integrity, etc.), but the truth is everyone is a news reporter these days if they have access to internets. Don’t try to deny it. Shout out to www.shapeandcolour.wordpress.com for this:

Art Made From Food - More interesting, and delicious looking art from Web Urbanist.
Apocalypse Chow - Don’t just survive the zombie apocalypse, eat well while you’re at it.
Chocolate Cake in a Mug - I had to post this for Eric, because I once witnessed him hilariously trying to make a brownie in a mug using hot cocoa mix and milk. This of course produced…hot cocoa. But now he can make it in five minutes with this recipe.
Forget Karaoke Violence - This is an older story, but apparently cutting the line at the famous midtown halal cart at 53rd and 6th can get you killed. Yes, they make an amazing chicken and rice, but damn.
